Fixed Lot Size System Functions in a Planning Run

It makes sense to select the fixed lot size for a material if it is only delivered, for example, in pallets of a certain quantity or in tanks of a certain size.

Where you have specified that the fixed lot size is to be used, the system will use the fixed order quantity recorded in the material master record as the order quantity in the case of a material shortage. If this order quantity is not sufficient to cover the shortage then several lots (of the fixed lot size) are planned for the same date until the shortage has been covered.

You can determine a threshold value for the fixed lot size. If this value is exceeded the material is allocated a termination message if too many order proposals are created for a particular date and material.

Fixed Lot Size with Splitting and Overlapping

For the fixed lot size with splitting, the fixed order quantity is divided into partial quantities which are not produced simultaneously but in regular intervals which overlap each other.

In the material master, you must maintain three fields for this particular lot-sizing procedure:

  • You must maintain the total order quantity in the Fixed lot size field.
  • You must maintain the partial quantities into which the system is to divide the total quantity in the Rounding value field. The rounding value must be a multipe of the fixed lot size.
  • You must maintain the period of time that the order proposals are to overlap in the Cycle time field.

In this lot-sizing procedure, the system creates order proposals for the amount recorded in the rounding value field until the fixed lot size has been reached. The planned finish dates overlap by the cycle time.

In the customizing screen for MRP, under the menu option, Lot size, you can determine whether the order proposals are to overlap either in the future or in the past:

  • If you select forward overlapping, the system schedules the planned orders in the future starting from the requirements date. The planned start date of each of the individual planned orders is displaced in the future by the cycle time.
  • If you select backward overlapping, the system creates planned orders which overlap in the past, starting from the requirements date. The planned start date of the individual planned orders is displaced in the past by the cycle time.
